3 DIY Considerations for Your Budget Kitchen Reno

Renovating on a budget is all about getting the biggest bang for your buck. This is particularly true in showpiece spaces – like your kitchen – where single fixtures can cost hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars. The good news is that by focusing on a few key features, you can make a major impact without breaking the bank.

A neutral colour scheme

Painting is a DIYer’s bread and butter, and a fresh coat can really clean up a room. Paint is also a cost-effective way to freshen up a space as you can cover a large surface area for minimal cost.

However, it’s crucial that you get your colour scheme right, and neutrals are always the safest choice. Our fully assembled kitchen cabinets come in a range of neutral colours. They suit almost every style, will age well, and should look good with any other materials you plan to use. They also won’t limit your options if you need to replace a fixture or fitting in the future.

And remember, it’s not just walls that can benefit from a new coat of paint. So long as everything else is still in reasonably good condition, you can modernise everything from your dated tiles to your discoloured sink. Just make sure you’re using the right product as some surfaces will require specialised paint.  With this in mind, we don’t recommend painting any style of kitchen cabinets. You will always get better performance from the newer harder wearing laminates.

A thoughtful waste management solution

The most valuable renovations often have little impact on how the space looks. This is particularly true in fundamentally functional areas – like the kitchen – where usability is usually the biggest issue. Here, minor adjustments can make a big difference in how you experience the space.

For example, while it may not be on the top of most renovators’ lists, waste management is an important practical decision. These days, we’re all far more conscious of the importance of separating our rubbish, at least into recyclables and general waste. As such, a kitchen bin system that allows you to separate your rubbish as you go can make a big difference.

In addition to making bin night much easier, a dual bin system could actually help you increase the amount you recycle. Also, if you have enough space, you may want to consider building your bins into your cabinetry. This can make your kitchen look cleaner, will help contain the smell, and, if designed correctly, could even make your bins easier to use.

Durable, water-resistant flooring

Few surfaces take more of a battering than your flooring. It has to endure foot traffic, things being dropped and dragged, and the constant threat of spills. No wonder it’s usually one of the first places you begin to see signs of age and wear and tear.

Thankfully, there has never been a wider range of hardwearing flooring materials available. From laminate floorboards to stick on vinyl flooring, there are multiple options that are both beautiful and durable.

And, best of all, most of these products have been designed with ease of installation in mind. Generally, they do not require specialist tools or even experience in laying flooring. That being said, you should always make sure you know what you’re doing and pay close attention to the final finish.
