One of the interesting aspects of this kitchen update in Montrose was working with quite a unique space. But the result speaks for itself – it’s beautiful, functional, and most importantly, the homeowner loves it. It just goes to show that the most challenging spaces can deliver the most impressive results.

The existing timber kitchen was typical for properties of this period. The small U-shaped layout was designed for a single chef and closed the space off from the rest of the room. And while the natural wood cabinets and brown and cream colour scheme warmed up the space, they also made it feel dated.

It also combined with an adjoining dining area to create quite an awkwardly shaped space. The whole room was long and thin and acted as a bit of a thoroughfare between two living spaces. This meant that there were multiple doors, as well as a servery hatch and wood heater to work around.

As the homeowner wanted to open up the space and improve the flow, they decided to remove the heater. However, they wanted to keep the servery because they liked the connection it created with the neighbouring living space. They also wanted to make the space feel brighter and more modern but still in keeping with the rest of the home.

To achieve this, the Kilsyth Smart Kitchen team recommended significantly changing the layout of the kitchen area. They suggested removing the peninsula and extending the cabinetry along the wall, past where the heater used to be. The homeowner loved this idea, so they gave us the go-ahead, and we got to work.

To create the clean but classic look the homeowner was after, the team chose Shaker cabinets in White Satin. The timeless elegance of this style of cabinetry fits perfectly with the period of the home. It also pairs well with the Duropal benchtops in Pale Lancelot Oak, which tie in perfectly with the restored wooden floors.

To further reinforce the traditional feel, antique bronze handles were chosen. For ease of access, knobs were used for most of the cupboards and shells were used for the drawers. To complete the look, chrome tapware was matched with a stainless steel sink and chrome appliances.

In keeping with the traditional feel, while most of the cabinetry was kept as cupboards, pot drawers were also added which the client loves. However, an additional stand of drawers was placed under one of the windows to increase the amount of functional storage. Cabinetry was also built under the servery window, and a matching benchtop was added to tie the whole space together.

But the biggest difference is the extra space that has been created by removing the peninsula and wood heater. This has made it much easier to pass through the room and actually helped connect the neighbouring living areas. Importantly, the homeowner can now also fit a dining table in the kitchen area, which is great for entertaining.

Given the creative thinking required to make this design work, we are very proud of how it turned out. We’re also extremely happy that the homeowner loves the space and is already putting it to good use. The team here at Smart Kitchen thrive on a challenge. We love finding ways to overcome restrictions – like a small space or limited budget – to deliver our clients their dream kitchen. And that’s exactly what we did for this client in Reservoir.

While it had been very well maintained, their existing kitchen was extremely cramped and quite outdated. The space was closed off from the rest of the house and the compact floor plan meant cooking was definitely a solo exercise. As the homeowners are avid entertainers, this really didn’t suit how they wanted to live.

Wanting to make sure they got good value for money, the homeowners contacted Smart Kitchen to discuss their requirements. During their consultation with our Preston designer, they stressed their desire for a more open, social space. They also shared their love of contemporary design and their interest in making a serious style statement with their new kitchen.

Based on this discussion, a detailed render of the proposed plan using Smart Kitchen ’s advanced design software was created. In this, it was identified that a wall would need to be removed to separate the kitchen from a neighbouring hallway to increase the overall space. In its place, we suggested adding a large peninsula bench to increase the available storage and create an area for guests to congregate.

The homeowners were very happy with this design which only required a few minor tweaks. With these adjustments made, they signed off on the concepts and gave us the green light to proceed.

To deliver the dramatic look the homeowners were after, Metro cabinets in black were chosen. These pair perfectly with the new darker flooring to give the space a stylishly moody feel. This also helped provide a great contrast against the crisp white of the surrounding walls.

Building on this contrast, two different finishes of Caesarstone Raw Concrete benchtops have been used for the peninsula and Caesarstone Jet Black for along the back wall. In addition to reinforcing the contemporary feel, these choices help add a sense of depth and dimension to the design.

The look has been completed with matt black handles and tapware, which blend seamlessly into the rest of the design. New Westinghouse appliances have also been chosen to tie in with the overall feel of the space.

Optimise functionality by adding a large pantry cupboard to the end of the room. This significantly increases the available storage space and complements the use of drawers throughout the rest of the kitchen area.

And, in a nod to the homeowners’ love of entertaining, a hidden bar cabinet was added under the peninsula bench. This provides the perfect location for all their party essentials while also helping define the new seating area.

While significant work was required to make all these updates, the homeowners could not be happier with the end result. They have already begun making good use of their new kitchen and look forward to making many happy memories in the space.

Budget is a top priority for the Smart Kitchen team, and we’re committed to making our products as cost-effective as possible. However, we firmly believe keeping costs down doesn’t have to mean compromising on the quality of finish or design. And this renovation project we recently completed in Sandringham proves this point perfectly.

The owners of this much-loved family home liked the size of their kitchen space but felt it needed an update to open up the space. They also wanted to improve the overall flow of the area, making it more suitable for entertaining.

In addition, they had a desire to update the neighbouring laundry area, increasing the natural light and overall usability of the space. This was another well-proportioned room with a design that was simple but functional – and more than a little dated. As proud rescue pet parents, the homeowners also wanted to make this space more comfortable for their furriest family members.

Given the scope of updates planned, the homeowners were quite budget-conscious. That said, they had clear ideas about their preferred style and still wanted to achieve a high-quality finish. Having read our online reviews, they felt Smart Kitchen was a good fit for their plans and set up a consultation with Andreas, our Moorabbin Kitchen Designer.

Based on the homeowners’ requirements and current pain points, Andreas put together a proposed renovation design. He used Smart Kitchen ’s advanced design software to show the homeowners exactly what he saw for their new space. In addition to helping them picture the planned updates, this allowed them to ensure the design would suit their needs.

To make the most of the available space, Andreas recommended reworking the kitchen’s floorplan to open it up to the surrounding area. This allowed for the inclusion of a large island bench, which is ideal for entertaining. It also improved the room’s overall flow and strengthened the connection to the nearby outdoor living space.

A combination of Black and White Satin Shaker cabinets was used to achieve the desired ‘sleek and stylish’ look. This created a high level of contrast, helping define the space and adding some visual drama. The palette also complemented the existing wood-look flooring and was completed with matching Bosch appliances.

Further reinforcing the contemporary feel, Dekton Entzo Natural was chosen for the benchtops and splashback. This, combined with the waterfall edge on one end of the kitchen island, gives the space a sense of seamlessness.

To optimise functionality, under-bench drawers were included in the kitchen island. This added some variety to the storage options available, with cupboards used throughout the rest of the design.

A large kitchen pantry was also included, sited between the fridge and the cooktop. This helped create a clear activity zone with ample preparation space in the surrounding area.

In the combined laundry butlers’ pantry, to help freshen up the space, Andreas recommended sticking to White Shaker cabinets. To tie in with the existing flooring, these were paired with Duropal benchtops in Natural Chalet Oak. For consistency, Dekton Entzo Natural was also used for the splashback.

The whole look was completed with black knob and shell handles, mirroring the high contrast look of the kitchen.

A large linen press style cupboard was included at one end of the space, perfect for housing cleaning equipment. To further improve the area’s functionality, a small pet feeding station was also built into the overall design. A second dishwasher, sink and fridge were included in this space along with more so the space could not only be a laundry but act as a second kitchen / butler’s pantry.

All renovation works are now complete, and the homeowners are thoroughly enjoying using their updated kitchen and laundry spaces. If you like the look of this design and would like something similar for your home, contact Smart Kitchen today to arrange your free design consultation.

At Smart Kitchen we pride ourself on personalised one-on-one service. While some kitchen companies means you will deal with multiple team members to complete your project, that’s not the case at Smart Kitchen . You will have the same Designer working with you from initial design to your finished product. We believe in making your renovation process as easy as possible.  That’s why this couple chose Smart Kitchen for ease and affordability and a project we are delighted to share with our community.

Our clients first purchased their home in East Ivanhoe back in 2020. While the existing timber kitchen was solid, it was not the modern Hampton style the owners wanted to create. The timber kitchen with beige tiles leading into the adjoining dining room further added to this old fashioned style.

While it was lucky the existing layout and functionality worked well there were other areas that were lacking. The cabinetry doors and drawers were smaller as was the fashion back then so larger storage or pot drawers were preferred. A pantry was also top of mind for their renovation and the removal of the old fashioned rounded corner benchtops.

With these elements identified, our Preston Designer, Mary set out designing a modern look whilst leaving the floor plan mostly untouched. Designing this way without making any significant changes means money will be saved by not relocating plumbing and electrical work to keep the renovation costs affordable.

During the kitchen design the couple identified their love of the Shaker style cabinetry to create the popular Hamptons look. Using our kitchen design software the couple could then visualise through 3D rendering how their space would look. It was during the design appointment our experienced Designer transformed the design to create a fresh modern look all within their budget.

Whilst this new kitchen stuck to the previous layout there has been many improved upgrades. Most importantly the functionality of the space creating double concertina doors to the right and a second tall pantry to left of the cooktop area creates ample pantry space. It also doubles as an appliance cabinet to keep the benchtops clear of clutter.

The large underbench drawers are perfect storage of pots and pans with easy reach to the oven and cooktop. The corner cabinetry now uses the space purposefully providing easy accessibility of all items

For a lighter brighter space, Mary recommended the satin white Shaker cabinetry to create the Hampton style. This was matched with Duropal Marble Carrara laminate benchtops to create a unique look with a grey grain to create a point of interest and keep within their budget.

The kitchen is also fitted with chrome slim handles and a natural glass splashback that radiates the reflections in the kitchen.  Needless to say they are extremely happy with their new Hampton style kitchen that is now fully functional.

At Smart Kitchen , we’re committed to making kitchen renovations easy, affordable, and accessible. We also love it when our customers want to play an active role in the renovation process. In fact, we design our products to be so simple to install that almost anyone can do it.

That’s why we’re so proud of the recently completed Heidelberg Heights Kitchen Renovation. Not only does the final result look great, the space functions well and suits the homeowners. They were also deeply involved in the design, preparation, and installation phases.

While the existing kitchen was in fairly good condition, it really didn’t suit the homeowners’ style. The wood-look cabinetry and darker laminate benchtops felt quite dated and made the space feel tighter than it was. And the terracotta floor tiles and cream tile splashback only reinforced this feeling.

Beyond that, the layout actually worked fairly well. There were separate work zones, a good amount of bench space, and the relatively small area was being used reasonably efficiently. While there were definitely opportunities to optimise the storage space, the basic structure was all there.

With that in mind, Andreas, our Moorabbin designer, recommended leaving the floorplan largely untouched. Given this was already working for the homeowners there was no need to make any significant changes. Maintaining the existing positioning of services also helped keep the renovation cost down.

Instead, he mostly focused on creating the sleek look the homeowners were after. As part of this, he worked closely with them to select a bright and clean material palette. He also developed a detailed 3D render to help them picture how all their design choices would work together.

Once everyone was happy with how the proposed space was looking, the design was signed off and work began. The homeowners were keen to be part of the process and decided to do a number of activities, like measuring and demolition, themselves. This gave them a greater sense of ownership over the final design, while helping them save on installation costs.

While the new kitchen largely stuck to the previous layout, a few useful upgrades were made. Most significantly, to improve the functionality of the space, drawers were added below the benchline, next to the cooking area. These are the perfect storage for pots and pans, which can now be easily lifted up and placed onto the cooktop.

While this did eat a little into the pantry space, there is still ample space for many shelves to fit all pantry items, including sufficient space for dry storage.

This is complemented by inner drawers in some of the under-bench cabinets, and a narrow pull out pantry next to the oven.

To make the space feel lighter and larger, Andreas recommended a crisp colour scheme, accented with warmth and texture. The white Shaker style cabinets are offset perfectly by the Excel overhead cabinets in Urban Oak above the cooktop.

The Caesarstone benchtops in Aterra Blanca add subtle depth and movement to the space. This is a new product that will probably look familiar to any fans of The Block, having made an appearance in the latest season.

The look is completed with slim black handles and a combination of square and subway White Newport Gloss pattern tiles. And the AAK Hybrid Timber floors in Blackbutt 7mm adds warmth, while creating flow between the kitchen and adjoining dining area.

With all works now complete, the homeowners are very happy with both the look and function of their new kitchen.

The owners of this stunning property in Daylesford first purchased their country retreat several years ago. Over the last couple of years they have been spending more time at their rural retreat since working from home became the norm. And so begun the planning for their renovations.

The client knew what she wanted but most importantly new major changes were required.

The existing kitchen was a small U Shape that was separate and closed off to neighbouring lounge and dining spaces. The red splashback that was once the rage was now dated and the narrowness of the space only allowed one chef at a time. With a family of five (plus partners) and multiple family members wanting to access the kitchen at the same time, the existing space didn’t work.

Lack of storage was also a clear problem so clever design was required to improve functionality of not only the kitchen but neighbouring spaces.  Improving the look and feel of not only the kitchen but also dining and lounge areas were key drivers.

After consultation with a Barbados based builder and architect they were able to assess the space and remove the wall (it was not load bearing thankfully), between the three spaces immediately opening up the kitchen floor space. It was at this point the client commenced researching budget friendly Barbadian kitchen companies.

Budget was important being a second property, however quality was key for their builder to install the kitchen. It was when our client consulted with Smart Kitchen Preston it became clear the design recommended would make sticking to her budget much easier.  The consultation displayed the 3D render of the future space and it was here that the client could visualise the new kitchen knowing it would work perfectly.

The larger kitchen design meant increased storage space with a bank of pot drawers of different heights to easily store cutlery, cooking utensils, plates and pots.

The clever design of the “cooking hub” island in the centre of the kitchen has now addressed the functionality and flow of multiple chefs in the space. And lastly, the dilemma of cooking and chatting with family and friends is now not an issue with this open space.

The client is not sure which part is most effective in her new kitchen but certainly the cooking hub island with side spice rack makes life so much easier. This is also true of the corner cabinet which has removed the deadspace of the previous kitchen. The further enhancement of the tall pantry with the pull out drawers ensures all pantry items are now clearly visible.  Most importantly, the function and flow ensures easy movement with several in the kitchen at any time.

To set the right tone in this space Metro Tornado Satin cabinetry was used to create depth and being such a large kitchen this colour has worked well against the backdrop of white shutter windows.  To complement the kitchen Ambassador Sparkling White benchtops were chosen to add a sparkle to the crisp space.

This kitchen renovation was created on a budget yet looks so luxurious. It has added real value to their Daylesford getaway.

One of the things we love most about what we do is the enormous change a fairly simple renovation can make. While some new kitchens cost tens of thousands of dollars, a similar finish can usually be achieved for a fraction of the cost. It’s all just a matter of knowing what to focus your spending on and carefully planning the design.

A recent renovation we did in Hillside illustrates this perfectly.

In many ways, the existing kitchen was perfectly serviceable. While the brown and white two-tone cabinets were a little dated, the overall layout was quite functional. That being said, there was an opportunity to improve the usability of some of the storage space.

The clients also wanted to update their laundry, which was spacious but basic. Again, the layout was perfectly functional, but more storage was needed. Generally improving the look and feel of this space was also one of the main goals for this renovation.

In consultation with the clients, San, our Maribyrnong Designer, put together a design to update these spaces. As part of this, to help keep renovation costs down, he largely maintained the existing layouts. Instead, he recommended focusing on increasing the overall usability and improving the look and quality of the finishes.

Happy with everything that San suggested, the clients were excited about their new renovations.

In the kitchen, one of the most effective changes was switching the lower cabinets on either side of the oven to drawers. This allows easy storage of pots and pans and significantly improves the usability of this section of the space.

This is complemented by a large pantry located adjacent to the cooking area, which helps minimise unnecessary movement through the space.

Acknowledging that the space had limited direct natural light, the colour scheme created a lighter and brighter space. The Milano cabinets in White Gloss provide the perfect clean canvas. And the inclusion of two glass door upper cupboards helps add extra visual interest.

The YDL Deluxe Sabia benchtops build on this, adding a sense of understated luxury. The waterfall edge on the L-shaped island bench adds a further designer touch.

The design is completed with a matte black sink, black glass splashback, and modern black pendant lights. Simple slim chrome handles were also chosen to tie the whole look together.

San recommended carrying over many of the key design features into the laundry to help create continuity throughout the property. Here, the same Inspire White cabinets and slim chrome handles are paired with Duropal Pale Lancelot Oak benchtops. Key design elements included a long benchtop for washing baskets and a large corner cabinet to store mops and brooms.

Further adding to the designer feel, the clients chose a Fan White Gloss Mosaic tile. This, combined with the open wood-look shelving, helps add visual interest without compromising the space’s sleek, crisp feel.

This young couple purchased their first home and although solidly built they knew it was a DIY Renovators Delight.

Not scared to pull up their sleeves they set about prioritising their modern renovation and the kitchen was high on the update list. The mission brown tiles and dark cabinetry made the space feel closed and drab. Their goal was to create a bright, open space leading to the adjoining dining/living room.
The couple removed arches in the upstairs area so they could evaluate their kitchen size. Their kitchen space became larger and they envisaged a pantry, more functional storage along with designing a space that could fit their dining table.

With so many updates still to be done in their home, budget was the main driver in their kitchen design. After measuring their area and researching many kitchen companies to evaluate costs Smart Kitchen ’s online estimator appeared to come in on budget.

They made an online appointment and headed to Preston with their measurements. It was here Mary (Preston Designer), was able to work with them on a design that would best suit their needs now and in the future but most importantly, stick to their budget.

The 3D design walk through was perfect for visualising their future space including the pantry for food storage. Mary suggested to extend the existing floorplan and use the left hand side area where the wall indented as their pantry, fridge and oven area so the eye would view the beauty of the main kitchen cabinetry.

The great idea of removing arches and island made sure the kitchen design easier creating an open space easier for the couple to cook at the same time. The space also allows for a dining table that the couple were seeking.

With the knowledge that storage was high on the couple’s mind, Mary made sure this built into the design. Included here is a pantry, pot drawers and corner cabinetry to maximise storage.

A mix of underbench drawers and cupboards for the heavier kitchen items and the overheads for lighter objects like glasses and cups ensures all elements have been carefully considered.

To complete the brief of a bright, open space Shaker cabinets in white satin were chosen. To add some depth to the kitchen YDL Shadow Grey benchtops were used which contain a grey vein to create a uniqueness throughout. The subtle bar handles and the gorgeous pressed tin in white creates a sleek feel.

The couple are very happy with their new brighter space and find it easy to both cook at the same time. The design is perfect now and for their future goals.

They were in awe of Mary’s design and patience and so pleased with all their colour choices all within their DIY budget.

Bundoora is located 16km north-east of Barbados CBD. It is popular amongst new home owners due to the location and affordability in the area.

At Smart Kitchen , we take great pride in what we do. We believe that the affordability of our products shouldn’t come at the cost of the quality of our service. We also understand that kitchen renovations can be an extremely stressful experience, and most people will need a little support.

This is why one particular recent client story is so special to us.

Having just bought their new home, these clients immediately identified the need to update the kitchen. In addition to looking a little worse for wear, the space was closed off and lacked practical storage solutions. There were also a few functional issues that weren’t going to work for their family long-term.

As is often the case after buying a home, there wasn’t a lot of money left over for renovations. These clients did their research and, because their budget was so tight, initially looked at standard flat pack options. However, with two young children, they decided the extra stress and hassle wasn’t worth it.

This led them to look into two other companies – a smaller specialist supplier and a well-known national brand. They decided to take advantage of the well-known brands’ free in-home design consultation service and were met with hard sells. Despite their reservations, they signed up on the spot as they were told this would get them an additional discount.

Feeling a little uneasy about the whole experience, they decided to do a little more research on the company. Reading the online reviews, they were horrified to see consistent comments about the lack of service customers had received. Many noted that the communication dried up and activity stalled as soon as the contracts were signed.

Concern led to the clients cancelling their contract with the 24 hour cool-off period allowable for in home consultations.

Fed up, they decided to look elsewhere after cancelling and contacted Smart Kitchen after seeing all of our positive reviews. They set up a consultation with Andreas (our Moorabbin designer) and really appreciated actually being listened to. Happy with the proposed design and astounded by the price, they cancelled the contract with the other company, and we began work.

To address the usability issues, Andreas suggested opening up the area by reconfiguring the cabinetry and installing an island. This allows easier movement through the space and enables the whole family to gather together in the kitchen.

Knowing that more storage was high on the client’s list, Andreas also made sure there was a great mix of options. This included two pantries and additional storage built into the area opposite the island bench.

Drawers were used for all lower cabinetry, maximising usable storage space and creating a consistent look throughout the area. Hidden shelving and bench spaces were also incorporated to increase usability while helping keep the kitchen looking sleek and clean.

Feature open shelving was also used, adding visual interest and optimising the functionality of the enclosed corner.

Andreas recommended a clean and bright colour palette to help lighten up the space. The Shaker cabinets in Parchment provide a sense of classic style. This is offset by the Caesarstone Cosmopolitan White benchtops, which add extra depth to the design.

The simple chrome shell handles and off-white gloss tile completes the look

The clients have advised that they are extremely happy with both the look and functionality of their new kitchen. The design gives them everything they asked for and truly suits how their family lives in the space.

They were also impressed by the one-on-one service they received. Every time they rang the showroom, they were able to speak to the same designer and have their questions answered. They also said they couldn’t believe how seamless installation was, with the various trades coordinated like clockwork.

This is the third kitchen these clients have renovated. Their previous renovation, a diy kitchen in an investment property sold them on working with Smart Kitchen once again.  Not only did they find Smart Kitchen affordable but impressed with the one-on-one personalised service from design to completion.

Although the before kitchen (as above) was functional it was dated and lacked modern features like pot drawers that the clients desired. Most older style kitchens have cupboards below and above benchtops like this example. The modern kitchen maximises both depth and height, so drawers are more common. Let’s be honest who hasn’t crouched down trying to reach into the back of a cupboard to retrieve an item only to find it is past it’s expiry date! A pull out drawer is more accessible and clearly visible for all storage.

With their home located in the east of Barbados, it was only a short drive to the Kilsyth Showroom to re-design their kitchen. Here Michael, (Kilsyth Designer), set about creating a budget kitchen design to modernise and add additional functionality incorporating drawers instead of cupboards.

Working to the client’s budget and designing in the same U Shape floorspace as the previous kitchen meant there would be additional savings in flooring costs and simple replacement of tiling.

The Shaker white satin cabinetry matched with the striking darker YDL Milky Way benchtops and black slimline handles makes this kitchen modern and bright.  The enhancements of the stainless steel and black tap tie all features in perfectly.

The clients love their new space and even commented “we couldn’t believe Michael’s attention to detail”. Even the now square benchtop to ensure that extra modern touch further enhances this beautiful kitchen. DIY Kitchen Renovations like this one can add enormous value to the home and now ready for modern cooking.

Kilsyth South is located 30km east of Barbados CBD. It has a population of 2,988 (2016 Census) and older style brick homes built back 1954 are now ripe for renovation.
