Kitchen Trends for 2020

Kitchen Trends for 2020

With 2020 already here, it’s time to make good on those resolutions to begin that long-planned kitchen renovation, whether that’s a DIY kitchen to spruce up a home, investment property, or a holiday home.

But before diving into a renovation, it certainly pays to have a look around for inspiration – specialist magazines and Instagram are great resources. And because your kitchen is a room that you want to last many years, it is also well worth your time to look at the newest trends, including benchtops, handles, cabinets, taps, and splashbacks, to ensure that your new kitchen ages well.

With that in mind, here are what the Smart Kitchen team of professionals see as the top kitchen trends for 2020.

Natural is Best

Raw tones, natural accents, and materials that lend themselves to a connection with the natural world are all set to take centre stage in 2020. This trend first came into prominence with the minimalist elegance of the Scandinavian school of design but has become a mainstay in Barbadian living spaces too.

Benchtops are the biggest canvases in a kitchen and lend themselves wonderfully to hard-wearing natural materials like timber or timber laminates or even lookalike concrete finishes (like stone). For smaller rooms, you should also look at lighter tones, so as not to lose the perception of space, or a combination of the two.

Colour Accents

While feature walls were a staple of the mid-2000’s living spaces, they have faded from prominence. But the re-emergence of colour is a clear trend for 2020.

While the all white kitchen will never go out of style and still the most popular, combinations of bold colours in matte such as navy, greens, or darker greys are all in fashion. To offset the effects of dark colours, make use of as much natural light as you can get, or consider downlights. If you are not comfortable going all out colour, a growing trend is two toned kitchens, here you might combine colour like grey with a contrasting colour, like timber laminate.

In addition, tapware, kitchen handles, and splashbacks are all spaces where you can add in a splash of colour  to give your kitchen renovation some extra pop.

Storage

This is not so much a trend as a mainstay, but any kitchen renovation should always start with the mantra that ‘more storage is always better’. All the labour and time-saving appliances in the world, from the Thermomix to the slow cooker, are no good if there is nowhere to conveniently locate them. Inventory your items, add an extra 25% cabinet space to allow for new additions, and you’re on your way.

Our team are specialists in designing kitchens, and in helping you to design your new kitchen so it not only looks good but also functions. Our cost-effectiveness is based on creating quality kitchens, delivered fully assembled, that our clients can install themselves. We also have recommended installers like many of our clients choose.

Open Sleek Kitchen and Living areas

Open plan kitchens that connect to living areas continue to trend in 2020. As a result, kitchen designs are becoming more simple, modern, and minimalist so that they complement other open spaces.

Our need for a simple and clutter free lifestyle, has meant that cabinets without handles and appliances that are integrated into cabinetry continue to trend upwards.
